I have finally finished university! After handing in my dissertation and last piece of coursework I still feel nervous about the result. However, it is an overwhelming feeling to be finished and heading back down to my home town. For 3 months, each day consisted of a 9am start in the library, and staying as long as I could to ensure I got work done that I had planned for that day. I have provided an overview of the 3 modules in Semester 2.

Fashion Buying and Forecasting

This module enabled the learning and understanding of the role of a buyer and forecasting trends. By using the WGSN website, we had to forecast trends for AW 19/20. I chose childrenswear for Ralph Lauren and the forecasted trend ‘Clash of the Tartans’ which fitted well with the brand’s ethos. We had to design a capsule collection for the designer which included 6 garments for girls and 6 for boys with swatches of tartan and colour ways . I was able to incorporate the Ralph Lauren polo symbol onto their signature polo shirts and garments as well as ensure the trend of tartan was enhanced.

Research Project

Finishing and finalising ‘The investigation of the relationship between fashion trends, identity and the objectification of female millennials’ bodies. ‘ After receiving feedback from semester 1 on the research proposal and editing the corrected sections, other elements including the discussion/ analysis, recommendations and conclusions had to be added to reach the 8,000 word mark. I had to undertake my own primary research with eight interviews and thirteen questions to female millennials who had experienced verbal or sexual harassment. I was astonished at the results and was able to add this research against literature to create the discussion section. It was also useful that everyone was assigned their own supervisor and the support I received was incredible.

After proof reading a significant amount and getting 2 copies of my dissertation printed, I was able to hand my dissertation in on the 19th of April. This is the biggest piece of work I have ever written and I became very passionate writing about it.

Women and the Media

This module was extremely insightful into all aspects of how women are portrayed in the media. All students had to complete a presentation and written coursework. My presentation was ‘How are overweight women portrayed in the media,’ I chose this topic because I found it interesting to research how overweight women are fat shamed and scrutinised compared to their slimmer colleagues. Media included film, t.v., magazines, sitcoms and social media. It was important to the lecturer that class discussion occurred throughout the presentation and so, questions were asked to stimulate answers from other students.

The written part of the coursework was a literature review which analysed each source used for the information into the topic. It was important to note how useful they were, the date etc and how this information contributed to learning about overweight women in the media.
