This is my last semester at Robert Gordon University, studying Fashion Management and so I wanted to share what I got upto in Semester 1.
Research Project – the start of my dissertation, a project about fashion and harassment. I found this topic interesting enough to spend a large amount of time and energy to write about it. I also knew it was an important issue that clothes and fashion choices are often blamed for harassment, and so I wanted to investigate further into the sexualisation of women, victim blaming and fashion trends. The second part is due in the second semester consisting of 8,000 words. This is the biggest piece of writing I have ever done. Fashion Project – this topic was about comfort and discomfort, we had to conduct a focus group as well as record and transcribe everything to then thematically analyse the major themes through the focus group and content analysis activity completed in class. We wrote about items that gave us psychological and physical comfort. Everyone had to do an individual photoshoot with the item that was physically or psychologically comfortable/ uncomfortable. Specifically, my photoshoot was a choker as this is physically uncomfortable on the wearer’s neck. A research report was formed in a professional booklet called ‘Discomfort in Clothing: Fashion Victim’ and I managed to learn a new software, (Indesign). I decided to make the front cover look fluffy to enhance the comfort them. Global Fashion Strategy – a groupwork activity which we had to create a PowerPoint presentation and create visuals for the next steps for a company. We chose Nasty Gal, we had to include background and financial information, factors that affect the company, short, medium and future strategies. For the future strategy, we suggested a collaboration with Victoria Secret that introduced new nightwear and underwear. Celebrity Culture – I chose the topic, ‘Does Celebrity Culture offer Specific Problems for Women Politicians,’ and showcased a PowerPoint presentation answering this question whilst enabling discussion in class. I used specific examples like Theresa May and Nicola Sturgeon to show how these politicians have been ‘celebritised’ as the media focuses on the style of these women rather than their political views.
This is a small breakdown of these modules, however a large amount of work was put into each and every one of them. I am currently continuing with Semester 2, writing my dissertation whilst studying the modules ‘Women and the Media’ and ‘Fashion Buying and Forecasting.’
